What are cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrencies are means of payment based on the principles of cryptography. As a result, they provide a secure and decentralised payment system that is not subject to geographical and temporal restrictions.

Unlike banks, digital currencies do not require a central clearing house, and therefore transactions can be processed almost instantly around the clock.

Bitcoin the first and most well known cryptocurrency, has been publicly traded since 2010. Since then, numerous other cryptocurrencies (so called "Altcoins", for alternative coins) have been created. The cryptocurrency space stands out in particular due to the high level of innovation.

Before Bitpanda supports a digital currency, it has to meet specific requirements. Those include amongst other criteria market capitalisation, stability, developer and user number. Please note that besides those requirements it is yet to be solely determined by Bitpanda whether a certain asset is added to the platform.
