What you need to know about the Ethereum hard fork

Update (February 28th 2019)

After the Ethereum upgrade was delayed back in January it is now set to happen on February 28th 2019 at around 21:00 / 9:00 pm CET. We will put trading for Ethereum (ETH) and all ERC20 tokens on Bitpanda in maintenance mode 2 hours before the update (around 19:00 / 7:00 pm CET).

The Constantinople and St. Petersburg network upgrade is now scheduled to happen at block 7280000 of the Ethereum blockchain, which will happen on February 28th around 21:00 / 9:00 pm CET. You can find a countdown timer at https://amberdata.io/blocks/7280000 and you can monitor the network upgrade in real time at http://forkmon.ethdevops.io/.

The Constantinople and St. Petersburg network upgrade is a major update to Ethereum’s blockchain protocol which will attempt to address questions of scaling. Despite the update making a lot of changes, it is uncontentious and highly unlikely to spawn any new chains. Therefore, there will be no new coins. The update will alter a number of features and aims to lay the foundation for improving efficiency in the future.

The hard fork on the Ethereum mainnet is scheduled for block 7280000, which is currently estimated to happen on February 28th around 21:00 / 9:00 pm CET. We will put trading for Ethereum (ETH) and all ERC20 tokens on Bitpanda in maintenance mode 2 hours before the update (around 19:00 / 7:00 pm CET).

If you are holding Ethereum on a Bitpanda wallet, here’s what you should note:

You can securely keep your funds in your ETH Bitpanda wallet and you do not have to do anything, we will perform the upgrade and take care of everything for you in the background. We will temporarily disable all Bitpanda Ethereum wallets including ERC20 wallets. Wallets could be down around the time the fork takes place. This is to ensure the network’s stability and that all deposits and withdrawals can be safely re-enabled.

You can securely keep your funds in your ETH Bitpanda wallet and you do not have to do anything, we will perform the upgrade and take care of everything for you in the background. We will temporarily disable all Bitpanda Ethereum wallets and may also disable trading if necessary. Wallets could be down around the time the fork takes place. This is to ensure the network's stability and that all deposits and withdrawals can be safely re-enabled.
