Bitpanda Card Transactions

How payments are processed

All payments are executed in EUR. When you make a purchase with your Bitpanda Card, the following happens almost simultaneously:

  1. The trade (Debit Card Release)
The respective amount is automatically sold from your connected payment asset (e.g. Bitcoin) to your EUR wallet
  2. The settlement transaction (Debit Card Reserve)
This amount is then reserved for the transaction
  3. Fiat Withdrawal (Debit Card Debit)
The amount is deducted in EUR from your EUR wallet to pay for the purchase. Be advised that this does not reflect a double-charge.

Tip: the Cashback rewards may take up to 15 days to be credited, as a result of the merchant's processing time. If the cashbacks are not credited within 15 days, reach out to the support team.

To activate contactless payments, you must first make a chip & PIN transaction.

For payments in non-EUR currencies, a currency exchange fee is deducted from your connected wallet. More details on fees here.

Transaction status

Successful payments are shown in your Bitpanda history with relevant tags. Failed transactions are not displayed.

Each transaction may show the following components:

  1. Trade – asset is sold to your EUR wallet
  2. Settlement – payment from your EUR wallet to the merchant
  3. Cashback – if applicable, credited in same crypto asset (1% base rate)
  4. Refund – if a transaction is reversed

Card declined & failed transactions

If a transaction fails, you will receive a push notification with instructions on how to proceed. Most payments fail due to insufficient funds on your connected wallet. Make sure you have enough assets in your chosen wallet to cover the payment amount. Transactions will also fail if you exceed your daily card limits or if your card is blocked.

The most common reasons why your card may have been declined include the following:

  • Your Bitpanda Card must be activated prior to use. If you have not done so yet, please complete the card activation as described here
  • Before contactless payments can be used, a normal chip and PIN transaction has to be completed
  • You don’t have enough funds in your connected Bitpanda wallet
  • The respective payment would exceed your daily card limits
  • You have entered an incorrect or expired SMS code
  • Withdrawals (including the Bitpanda Card) have been blocked for 48h after resetting your password or 2FA
  • Your card is blocked for any of the reasons mentioned here
  • You have ordered a new card and are trying to use your old expired card
  • Platform downtime (please check our status page to find out more). To be notified about updates, click on Subscribe to updates and select the relevant topics
  • The wallet of the connected payment asset was in maintenance while initiating a payment
  • You have reached the proof of funds threshold for your Bitpanda account
  • The payment was declined due to a specific Merchant Category Code (MCC) that is excluded from payments (e.g., Automated Fuel Dispensers)
  • There is a technical issue on the merchant’s side:
    • If using the physical card, the card machine may have had issues. Try another machine or ask for manual entry
    • If using the card online, it could be due to high transaction volume or internet issues. Retry the transaction or try alternative options like Google Pay
  • If you deposit to Revolut using the Bitpanda Card and the delivery address does not match your Revolut address, the deposit will be declined
  • You put some restrictions on your card. This can be seen and modified under "PIN and Security".
  • You do a Paypal deposit: in this case, the same 7-days period needs to be observed before withdrawing/selling the attached money.
  • The CVV or PIN entered is not correct. Please make sure you are using the current card one and not an older one.
